What's Your Word?
Now that we’re a couple of weeks into 2019, I’m guessing you’ve heard (or seen in your newsfeed) people declaring their “word of the year” for their life and/or their business.
Maybe you’ve already declared your word…
Or maybe you’ve chosen one, but you’re not quite sure if it’s the right fit (don’t worry, you can change it!)...
Or, in the busyness of the new year, maybe you’ve not yet had a moment to really get clear on your word (that’s ok—now’s your chance!).
Personally, I’m a big fan of choosing a word of the year instead of making resolutions. To me, resolutions feel rigid and full of pressure—and they don’t take into account the unpredictability of life (plus, they leave us feeling pretty discouraged when we don’t live up to them).
On the other hand, a word of the year feels much more like a gentle guide, a constant friend who’s there to help us create positive change throughout the year ahead—even when unexpected challenges arise or plans need to shift. A word of the year a great way to set an intention for how you want your year to unfold, how you want to feel, and what you want your life to look like.
Your word can serve as a guidepost for:
Making decisions in alignment with your values, goals, and/or desires
How you choose to react to unexpected challenges or situations (and a kind reminder to yourself to help you get back on track following any imperfect moments)
The way you want to approach your goals and dreams
Creating a foundation for your own growth and personal transformation
Oh, and a great thing to note is that your “word” of the year doesn’t have to be just one word. It can be a phrase or a group of words (or simply one single word if you want it to be)—it’s completely up to you!
Now, I’m going to share my own word of the year with you but before I do, I encourage you to take a moment and reflect on your own word/phrase (if you’ve chosen one) and really set it as your intention for 2019...
OR…
If you’ve not yet picked a word or found one that works for you, here’s what I recommend:
Take 5-10 minutes and grab a pen and paper (and some tea, if you like!). Scribble down any words or phrases that come to mind that relate to how you want to feel this year, why you want to reach a certain goal or how you desire to experience a change. (I recommend writing down at least 10 or more).
Spend a few moments reading those words and phrases out loud—which ones speak to you? Which ones really resonate with the way you want 2019 to feel and the kind of life you want to create?
Once you connect with a word or phrase, write it on a card or print it off on pretty paper and post it up somewhere in your room or office—where it can serve as a gentle reminder to you each and every day!
As for me, I have more than one word this year. My words for 2019 are:
Courage
Love
Believe
Why? Because I want to lead with a COURAGEOUS heart full of LOVE in all I do…and continue to BELIEVE that the universe and I are co-creating and that everything is always FINE :)
Alright, now that I’ve shared mine I’m curious to know what your word (or phrase) of the year is and why you chose it—I’d love it if you sent me a quick note to rebecca@rebeccadouros.com. Declaring your word outwardly is a beautiful way to connect with the universe and get your intention flowing into all you do this year.
